A team of jailbreakers has successfully developed a workaround to let full-screen App Store apps run on Apple TV. The much-awaited capability of running iOS apps on Apple TV has been realized as hackers Steve Troughton-Smith and TheMudkip developed an iOS jailbreak, dubbed MobileX for Apple TV?s set-top box. The hackers have announced development of the jailbreak in a YouTube video clip. MobileX can now help you enjoy full-screen iOS apps on Apple TV, Apple?s flagship web-to-TV system.

MobileX, Apple TV jailbreak
According to the hackers, the Apple TV jailbreak is a window manger for iOS, which replaces springboard to let iOS apps run on an Apple TV. All apps will just run and scale up to 720p resolution, Troughton-Smith says in the video clip. Well, the hack breaks iOS, which runs Apple?s set-top-box. And so, it will certainly void warranty of your set-top-box.
Since Apple TV doesn?t come with a full-featured input system like a touchscreen or keyboard, hackers depended on alternative options to hack the set-top-box. A combination of the Apple TV Remote, Virtual Network Computing (VNC) and Secure Shell (SSH) is thus used by the hackers to control the device. After the jailbreak, Apple TV will show a menu to allow users to open, quit and show multiple apps side-by-side. The menu can be easily controlled using your Apple Remote.
The video clip from the hackers simply shows Apple TV as running Facebook app from App Store. All leading iOS apps such as Safari, YouTube, Maps, VNC player and others will run smoothly on Apple TV, the jailbreakers claim. If you use an additional input option like a mouse or keyboard, it will be much smoother to run and manage iOS apps on Apple TV. However, it will work well with the Remote itself.
In the description of the YouTube video, Troughton-Smith has written that they are forced to jailbreak Apple TV as Apple is not allowing developing apps for Apple TV. Even though, MobileX is not yet ready for public release. The hackers are still working with the jailbreak to make it ready for public.
Apple unveiled the recent version of Apple TV in September 2010. The device has been receiving huge response from market since it is a great platform for a person to watch video contents on the web on a large screen. The set-top box of Apple TV runs on the company?s proprietary A4 processor, which you can see in iPhone 4.
In fact, hackers used to jailbreak all new iOS devices from Apple including its flagship smartphone iPhone and tablet iPad. Whenever Apples brings out a new product or software upgrade, hackers take only a few hours to jailbreak it. It is now the time for Apple TV users, who love jailbreaking, to run full-screen iOS apps on their devices.
