Cougars baseball team starts 1-2

Garden City's baseball team got off to a rocky start this week, dropping two of its first three games.

The Cougars' lone victory so far came Wednesday when they mercied Westland John Glenn, 11-1, in a game that was shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

Sophomore southpaw Brad King was excellent on the mound, earning the win after yielding just one unearned run in 3.2 innings. King struck out five while scattering two hits and four walks.

Tyler Glenfield pitched the final 1.1 frames, issuing one walk and fanning one Rocket.

Offensively, senior Tyler Steele led the way for the winners, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Corey Lackey (RBI double, run), Zak Kmet (RBI triple, two runs), King (RBI single) and Jeremiah Vera-Burgos (single and run) also hit well.

?Our defense was solid and we pitched pretty well, despite the walks,? said Garden City head coach Steve Herman.

On Thursday, the Cougars dropped a 7-4 decision at Livonia Franklin.

?We made a couple of costly errors that led to three of their runs,? Herman said.

Kmet worked the first four innings on the mound and gave up five runs ? only two of which were earned. He struck out five, walked four and hit a couple of Patriots. Shawn Friesner pitched the final two frames (two earned runs, three strikeouts and one walk).

The Cougars were limited to seven hits, including doubles by Kmet and Austin Floyd. Sean Fox and Jared Conroy had RBI. GC scored twice on wild pitches.

?We are going to work hard to improve heading into next week,? Herman said.
